AD20: Alameda County

What are Assembly District Delegates?

Every two years, the CA Democrats elect 7 women and 7 men from each Assembly District in CA as delegates to the state party. Those who are elected will have a chance to vote for the new party chair and other leadership. The race is hotly contested and will determine how welcoming, grassroots-focused and innovative the party becomes or how beholden it will remain to big money interests.

Delegates elect Party officers, endorse candidates for statewide, legislative and congressional office, attend the annual convention, network with other Democrats, represent your constituency, promote the California Democratic Party agenda, and vote to endorse resolutions and ballot measures.

You get 14 votes for delegates, 1 of which you must also vote for Executive Board Representative.

Detailed Information

Raisa Donato

Having immigrated from the Philippines at age 4, I have experienced the trials and tribulations of being an outsider to a foreign land. Luckily, I live in the great state of California, where our freedom and progressive values are cherished and appreciated by its citizens. As we prepare ourselves for the next four years of a conservative run government, we must try to preserve the rights our brothers and sisters have fought so hard for in order to make a more perfect union. I want to make it very clear that a progressive movement is not generated through hate, but thrives on love and compassion for men, women, animals and the Earth.

I am the oldest of five. As anyone from a large family will tell you, family life is one of the best foundations for leadership imaginable. You have to serve as a diplomat, a nurturer, a bodyguard and sometimes a disciplinarian. As an Iraq War veteran who served as a combat correspondent and was deployed overseas multiple times, I’ve learned the importance of connecting with a global culture, and I firmly believe that open and direct communication is the best way to solve problems and create real and lasting change in our world. It’s not just talking to others, it is about listening to others. When I first moved to the Bay Area, I supported executive and HR communications at Lockheed Martin’s Space Systems Company. I listened to and expedited communications for employees from across the country. My work connected people in California, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, and as ADEM, I will bring all of that energy and all of my capabilities to improve how our Democratic Party serves its constituents.

Miki Nakamura

Hi! My name is Miki and I have been an acupuncturist in my community for 12 years. As a healer and a small business owner I have witnessed the dwindling of the middle class in the last couple of decades. I have also had to heal many of those who are stressed from the consequence of the dwindling middle class. Bernie helped me realize that I need to take responsibility for this. Hence, I got involved in the campaign, and led many events and canvassing in my city Hayward and eventually went to Philadelphia for the DNC. I really care for my fellow citizens who are not the 1% and want to help in any way I can. I realize getting involved politically is for the long haul but I have perseverence and I will continue to fight for the less privileged and minorities in this country who are underrepresented. I thank all of those who care enough to keep fighting!

Michele Jenkins

I’m Michele Jenkins, and I represent a new wing of the Democratic Party. We are progressive, passionate, and ready to transform the Party into a modern grassroots movement that represents all of us, not just big money donors and special interest groups. I strongly believe that we must get big money out of California politics, from our city councils, to the Capitol in Sacramento, to the White House. It was Bernie Sanders who inspired me to turn my beliefs into action. I am proud to say that I was heavily involved with the Sanders campaign, and helped to organize, canvass, and register voters throughout the East Bay. As a young Korean-American woman in engineering and a member of the LGBTQ community, I know that we must fight for inclusion and representation everywhere we do not have it. I am running because I believe our district’s delegates should be representative of our district diverse and hard-working. I would be honored for the chance to represent AD-20 as your delegate to the California State Democratic Party.

Diana Silva

New to the bay area but not new to the democratic process. Originally from Chicago, Illinois have participated in the last three elections through voter canvassing door to door.

Althea Weber

Hi! I’m Althea, a College Student, Bernie Sanders enthusiast and volunteer. I wasn’t always involved or interested in politics until this past year. What got me involved was the mounting issues of education, energy, and health care. Bernie Sanders really spoke to me when he presented his views on these issues. I want to be an assembly district delegate to support change in the issues that affect the people of my community and future generations.

Mimi Dean

I have lived in Assembly District 20 in the unincorporated Eden Area in San Lorenzo, for 25 years. I have been teaching in the San Lorenzo Unified School District for almost 28 years. My degree is in Geography and Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University. I care deeply about my students and community. During my enjoyable career in San Lorenzo, I have worked hard to make my community a better place for our families . Some of my achievements include creating multiple water wise school gardens at all three schools I have worked at, inspiring students to think for themselves, helping students learn the importance of taking care of our environment, encouraging students to be thoughtful leaders of their communities, and teaching students how to be the next generation of makers. My home is known as Green Grrrl Gardens, a sustainable oasis in the heart of the East Bay. I am a member of the Eden Area Food Alliance, a local group working on food justice and food policy in the Eden Area of Alameda County, California. In my spare time, I work hard to promote equity, create art from funky junk, grow, gather, and process nature’s bounty, collaborate with amazing groups and individuals, and educate myself to become a better human being.
