AD5 - Alpine, Amador, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Calaveras, Eldorado, Placer & Tuolumne Counties

What are Assembly District Delegates?

Every two years, the CA Democrats elect 7 women and 7 men from each Assembly District in CA as delegates to the state party. Those who are elected will have a chance to vote for the new party chair and other leadership. The race is hotly contested and will determine how welcoming, grassroots-focused and innovative the party becomes or how beholden it will remain to big money interests.

Delegates elect Party officers, endorse candidates for statewide, legislative and congressional office, attend the annual convention, network with other Democrats, represent your constituency, promote the California Democratic Party agenda, and vote to endorse resolutions and ballot measures.

You get 14 votes for delegates, 1 of which you must also vote for Executive Board Representative.

I am a retired businessman, and hard working progressive Democrat. I am the Treasurer of the Mariposa County Democratic Central Committee and member of the Mariposa and the Oakhurst Democratic Clubs.

I am the current Assembly District 5 E-board Representative to the California Democratic Party and a member of the Party’s Legislative Standing Committee. I am also a member of the Party’s Rural, Environmental, Progressive and Disabilities Caucuses.

I am a passionate environmentalist and as President of the Yosemite Area Audubon Society, I built the team that has brought our chapter statewide and national recognition. In 2013, I received National Audubon’s coveted Callison Award and in 2014, I received Point Blue Conservation Sciences Volunteer of the Year Award for my environmental work.

In 2014, I brought Audubon Chapters from all over California together to save our highly threatened (currently under consideration for endangered listing) Tricolored Blackbird from extinction. One of the projects that we have brought to fruition has brought governmental and private interest working together to create nesting and foraging habitat for the birds. In another, we have brought together four property owners and a cattleman, who leases much of the property involved, together to enhance and expand the existing habitat that is on all four properties.

We still have a long way to go to save this bird species, but we have made good progress to date.

I am a single mom with a PhD in Feminism and Performance Studies and a Masters degree in US Government. I am currently focused on expanding the Democratic Party in California to include more working people, to expand voter registration, to mobilize progressives to run for office, and to win state and local elections. I am working with other progressives in Amador County to charter Motherlode Rising, a new progressive Democratic Club, and we have had two meetings so far. I believe grassroots organizing is the key to building an equitable and sustainable future, and that is the message I am bringing into the Democratic Party.

I am focused on the following policy issues: women’s health and reproductive choice, violence against women, women in prison, mental health, homelessness, and drug addiction.

Greetings Democrats! Peter Leinau, Oakhurst Democratic Club member and AD 5 Progressive Delegate here- Lifetime Californian, married, 1 child. As one of your AD 5 delegate for 4 terms (since 2008) I have been active in the drafting and adoption of progressive platform planks and party resolutions against the death penalty, in favor of environmental protection and conservation, against nuclear energy; in favor of peace and against war, assassinations, and drones; in support of labor protections and against so called “free trade”; in favor of single payer healthcare and funding for rural hospitals, and more. I have phone-banked for our progressive candidates, made calls for our progressive causes, and worked to get-out-the-vote. Volunteered for Bernie through the Primaries and at the CA San Jose Dem Convention (See photo :-)) The results of the national November election are alarming, and I hope to contribute to a robust California repudiation of the deceit and fabrication underlying the Trump electoral victory. My activism began in the 70’s for the California Coastal Initiative and continued through activism and street actions for the environment and against wars I have spent my career as science teacher and environmental educator, and am proud of my multiple terms as a CTA local President, Grievance Chair and member of the bargaining team. Currently I am a full-time parent and part-time ski instructor. I am running to be a delegate because I want to help the California State Democratic Party and our local Assembly District craft a thoughtful and strategic path forward that maintains a commitment to progressive values and responds effectively to “Trumpism”. I respectfully request your vote to be one of your 14 AD-5 Delegates to continue our work together for a better, more progressive CA Democratic Party and a better tomorrow for our children! Thank You!

I’m a lifelong CA resident, born and raised in Berkeley. I served in the Air Force, then returned home to work and attend UCB. After graduating, I taught public school for 30 years. This past year I voted for Bernie Sanders, then Hillary Clinton. I see the environment and global warming as the clear challenge for our society and the world. Human and civil rights cannot be ignored, including voting rights and women’s rights. I support universal healthcare.
