AD8 - Sacramento County

What are Assembly District Delegates?

Every two years, the CA Democrats elect 7 women and 7 men from each Assembly District in CA as delegates to the state party. Those who are elected will have a chance to vote for the new party chair and other leadership. The race is hotly contested and will determine how welcoming, grassroots-focused and innovative the party becomes or how beholden it will remain to big money interests.

Delegates elect Party officers, endorse candidates for statewide, legislative and congressional office, attend the annual convention, network with other Democrats, represent your constituency, promote the California Democratic Party agenda, and vote to endorse resolutions and ballot measures.

You get 14 votes for delegates, 1 of which you must also vote for Executive Board Representative.

I want the Democratic Party to take an active role in representing regular working class people. As the middle class continues to disappear and wealthy interests continue to gain more economic power, too many people are disillusioned with politics because they don’t trust politicians and don’t see how politics relates to their lives.

We can turn this around by focusing on the issues and organizing people in our communities. We need to find and develop hundreds of leaders to get involved. We need to recruit many of them to run for office.

In these dangerous political times we have an amazing opportunity in a strongly Democratic state. If elected my 3 top priorities for the CA Democratic Party are 1) single payer healthcare in CA, 2) affordable housing, and 3) free tuition at CSUs and UCs.

In addition I will make sure that the party fights for full funding for K-12 education (including music and arts programs), expanding the right to organize a union, publicly funded clean elections, protecting immigrants, stopping climate change, lowering incarceration rates, and exploring the idea of a universal basic income.

I look forward to working with all of you.

I am an attorney, working for the state of California, and a former public defender. I have two grown sons and a grandson. I served in the United States Air Force in 1973-74, and as a lifelong progressive Democrat, I was honored to serve as a delegate to the 2016 Democratic National Convention, representing thousands of voters who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders. I have actively campaigned for Democratic candidates for over 43 years, and I look forward to taking this step – becoming an ADEM delegate – and continuing the fight for the social issues that are so close to my heart. In particular, California leads the nation when it comes to placing into action the progressive ideals we all strive to achieve. If there is anything I can do to insure a better future for my children and grandchild, a cleaner future for our planet, and a healthier future for all Americans, I want to do it! My focus is on a clean environment, equal rights for all human beings, tuition-free education, and universal healthcare for all. Being a part of our Democratic process, acknowledging my heartfelt obligation to participate and help guide California in its leadership role, I know I am ready to participate as an ADEM delegate.

We must make certain we maintain the progress we have made and initiate change starting at the local level.

As a true progressive I will represent the party at the district level and support EVERY group that is a part of our community this includes those who are being marginalized or discriminated against – a black mother trying to keep her children safe from the police – a man married to a man , a woman married to a woman, a person of whatever sex they were born; having the right to be who they feel they are, women deciding what happens to our bodies, guns being regulated so there are less killings, mental health reform so people get help instead of locked up and police officers being respected but also held accountable.

I will stand for protecting our planet and fighting for our water rights, access to quality affordable healthcare for everyone and the politicians who are standing with us in protecting all these rights.

I am part of the Progressive-Labor Alliance slate in AD8 that includes 13 other men and women who share the same values as me and many other Bernie supporters. Be sure to support these progressive candidates in AD8:

My name is Omar Mahmi, and I am a firm believer in being active in our nation’s political process. As a first time voter this election cycle, after receiving my American citizenship, I have vowed to support the Democratic Party’s efforts to include the young voters and minority communities in the voting process. Back in July of 2016, it was a great honor to be a member of the California Bernie Delegation at the National Democratic Convention, but I’m eager to continue supporting and representing my community. As an activist who cares about civil rights, human rights, immigrants rights, workers rights, and liberty and justice for all, I see my decision to run for this position as a chance to strengthen our Democratic Party’s commitment to inclusiveness and fairness. I hope to encourage everyone in Assembly District 8 to register and vote for all upcoming elections and to be proactive members of our community. I believe that the people’s power comes from voting and the political process as a whole, and I am running to become an Assembly District Delegate so that I can properly represent the interests of my community.

am a para-educator who is very politically active. I have received volunteer awards from California School Employees Association, the Democratic Party of Sacramento County and California Democratic Party Region 3. I also have been honored to receive Courage Campaign’s “United in Courage” award this spring. I have been both an elected and appointed member of the Sacramento County Central Committee for years and attended many conventions. I participate in many Progressive Democratic Clubs. I am also running for the ADEM 8 Executive Board. You want someone to represent you who will be reliable and show up when they say they will. You want someone who has families and working people’s needs on the forefront, not corporate interests.

I am a fighter, activist & staunch unionist. I am an out & proud gay man & have paid the price for it by losing jobs, housing, becoming homeless for a time. I was born ready for these unique times being born into 2nd class citizenship in the 60’s. At 10 yo I was in the class which integrated the white schools NOT in the South, but here in Cali (Merced)! After my parents divorced & falling out of the middle class we became homeless. We ended up on welfare for awhile. We worked in the fields & got ripped off daily by our employer. I even had to run from immigration once even though I was born here! I was thrown out of high school for standing up for myself & heritage for questioning the history books in class & sent to a continuation school with barbed-wire around previously used as a holding camp decades before for the local Japanese-Americans during WWII (what an education). During my coming of age years I was a young man during the AIDS crisis & buried over 30 of my friends while Ronald Reagan & the Repugs wrote us off for dead! This is when I went from disenchantment to activism in 10 seconds flat. I joined ACT-UP & QueerNation & volunteered for the Names Project Quilt & Shanti Project. I fought back against Facism then & am ready to do so again! I am a Gulf War non-combat vet kicked out under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell & fought the military & gov’t whom tried to dishonorably discharge me & send me to federal prison at Leavenworth facing hard labor on a chain gang. I fought & won my honorable discharge but lost my career ending up homeless again. I have rebuilt my life over & over & over again. I believe in, have & will continue to fight for public education, women’s equality & reproductive rights, civil rights, GLBTQ?A rights, immigrants rights, civil liberties, protecting the environent & stopping fracking, protecting & enhancing freedom to organize into a union, raise the minimum wage & establish a living wage, establish universal single-payer healthcare, overturn Citizen’s United & establish publicly financed elections, statehood for Washington DC & Puerto Rico, breakup the endless war machine etc! Remember Orlando! Love Trump Hates! Locally back in August 2015 as Prez of JFK I connected with the Bernie Sanders campaign & plugged into a webinar and held a public event attend by about 60 people. We all have a part to play! Let’s make a revolution happen for real without a shot fired!

My delegate statement: As a life-long Democrat, a progressive and a veteran, I would be honored to serve as an elected delegate to the California Democratic Party. I was raised in a liberal household, which instilled in me the importance of service, led me to join the U.S. Navy, and later pursue a career in politics and public service. As a father I want to ensure that all Californians have access to quality public education; I want to ensure that all parents can raise their children in a safe community, with clean air and water. As a Californian who has been through the experience of losing healthcare, I want to fight to ensure all Californians have universal access to care; as a Democrat I reject the injustice of a system that allows the Insurance industry to place profits before people. As a husband I support marriage equality. I believe in economic justice and reject policies that contribute to the widening chasm between haves and have not’s; I support strong unions, both public and private, which serve as a check against the avarice of Corporate America. As a veteran I want to fight to ensure all veterans have access to services they have earned and rightly deserve. And as a veteran I want to see our service members come home and our foreign wars come to an end. As someone who fights daily in my job to defend access to the civil justice system, I believe strongly in a robust civil justice system and that system’s ability to hold malfeasant actors accountable. For these reasons and more I am a Democrat. I would be humbled to have your support.

Note: I am a Bernie supporter. I contributed to his campaign numerous times and I participated in GOTV out of the office on 21st. I am a committed progressive that wants to push the party to back to the Left, to return to its progressive, pro-worker, pro-consumer roots.
